The Predators Report Newsroom

Delmore Traded To Buffalo
The Predators sent defenseman Andy Delmore to Buffalo for a third round pick in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. Andy was tied for the league lead in goals by defensemen with 18. "We have made the decision that our defense is an area we need to rebuild," said Predators' general manager David Poile. "Andy has had two productive seasons in Nashville, but we will start the rebuilding process from within with some of our young and promising prospects." Those may include Tomas Kloucek, Dan Hamius, newly acquired Curtis Murphy, or draftee Ryan Suter.

The Predators Acquire Curtis Murphy
In a three team swap, the Predators acquired 27 year old minor league defenseman Curtis Murphy from the Minnesota Wild. The Predators sent Peter Smrek to Ottawa to complete the deal. Murphy was named AHL defenseman of the year after scoring 23 goals and adding 31 assists while playing for the Calder Cup champions in Houston. Although he is small by NHL standards (5-8, 185 lbs), he brings a winning attitude and championship experience. He played for Predators assistant coach Peter Horachek while playing in the IHL's Orlando Solar Bears. ''He was rookie of the year the first season with us down there,'' Horachek said. ''He's been on the all-star team three times. Curtis is a dynamic guy who's won two championships, one in the American League and one in the IHL.'' Curtis also was a member of North Dakota's NCAA Championship team in 1996-97.

Gary Suter A Predator?
After drafting Ryan Suter with their third pick, the Predators have learned that former Sharks defenseman Gary Suter maybe interested in coming out of retirement to play alongside his nephew. But for that to happen, Ryan Suter would have to make the team first. He has already commited to playing at the University of Wisconsin. ''We'll see how he compares with a lot of other players, strength-wise and otherwise,'' GM David Poile said. ''Then we'll sit down with him and see what he would like to do. Then based on that, maybe we'll talk to Gary.'' Having a veteran of Gary's ability will also be a help in the locker room. With such a young defense corps, this would be a valuable addition.

Tootoo Signs 3 Year Deal
Predators prospect Jordan Tootoo could have re-entered the NHL draft this year, but instead signed a three year deal to remain with the club. Listed at 5-9, 193 pounds, he led the Canadien National Junior team to a silver medal. He also rang up 74 points in 51 games for the Brandon Wheat Kings of the WHL. Jordan could be playing in Nashville this fall. ''It's another young player who we'll give every opportunity to play on the team next year,'' GM David Poile said. ''We haven't really had that kind of a player before - a real energy, catalyst kind of guy who pound for pound is as tough as they come."

Petrov To Return
Oleg Petrov, who was acquired from Montreal at the trading deadline, has commited to returning to Nashville for the 03-04 season. Oleg is set to make $1.3 million next season.

Stu Goes To School
Stu Grimson will not be returning. Instead of hitting players on the ice, Stu will be hitting the books. The "Grim Reaper" has been accepted into the law school at the University of Memphis. With Post Concussion Syndrome ending his hockey career, Grimson could use his law degree to continue in hockey with an off-ice job.
