Timonen Avoids Arbitration
Nashville, Tennesee-Kimmo Timonen bypassed his arbitration hearing on Friday, by signing a four year deal on Thursday night. The $10.5 million dollar deal will pay him $2 million this season and top out at $3 million each the 3rd and 4th seasons. "This deal ensures that he will remain a leader on our team for years to come," (Predators GM David Poile). Last season Kimmo totaled 28 of his 40 points with the man advantage. He also led the Predators in ice time in each of the last three seasons.

Timonen Undergoes Arbitration Kimmo Timonen's arbitration hearing has been set for August 15th. Predators GM David Poile said. ''Our goal is to sign him, and he's said he wants to be signed by us. So one way to look at it is that arbitration might just speed up the process. Kimmo's agent, Bill Zito, said that he thinks both sides would come to an agreement before the hearing. Both sides agreed that they were working for a multi-year deal.

Toughguy Added To Roster GM David Poile has announced that the team has signed 33 year old forward Jim McKenzie. Because of team policy, details of the deal were not disclosed. "With this signing, the Nashville Predators have added a physical presence on the ice and a veteran leader to the locker room," said Poile. "Jim McKenzie is an established pro who will fit in well with our leadership corps and he immediately makes us a bigger and tougher team." Jim ( 6-4, 230 lbs) led the Devils with 14 major penalties last year. A veteran of 819 NHL games in 14 seasons, he has 47 goals and 49 assists while sitting out 1651 minutes in penalties.
TPR Joins The Hockey Alliance We here at the Predators Report are happy to announce that we have joined the Hockey Alliance. The Alliance is made up of a group of web sites that covering specific NHL teams. All sites benefit by the sharing of information. There is a link on the left.
Suter To Play In Wisconsin Ryan Suter will play hockey for the University of Wisconsin this fall. GM David Poile and Neil Sheehy, an NHL agent and family friend who is an advisor to the Suters, agrees that he should wait to start his pro career. "Mentally and in terms of his skills, he might be able to make that step. But physically he needs to develop and there's no reason to rush that process.'' They added that he might join the Admirals after his freshman season.
NHL Schedule Out The NHL is due to release its composite and individual team schedules for the 2003-2004 season on Wednesday, July 16 at 3pm, ET. Both schedules will be available on NHL.com.
Preds Acquire Pair Nashville acquired 24 year old forward Mike Farrell (6-1, 215) from the Washington Capitals on Monday for defenseman Alexander Riazantsev. The Predators also signed 25 year old free agent Ben Simon (6-0, 195), who had played for Atlanta. "They are two kids that haven't had much of a chance to play in the NHL,'' GM David Poile said as he described both players. ''They're both tenacious, competitive and hard to play against, guys who'll compete for jobs at training camp. I think they could be good complements to our skilled forwards.''
Hartnell Signs New Deal Forward Scott Hartnell has re-signed with the Predators. He was a restricted free agent without arbitration rights. According to the Canadien Press, Hartnell has accepted the Predators' qualifying offer of a one-year, $1.18 million dollar deal.
Preds Sign Two The Predators have begun rebuilding the team's blueline, by signing defensemen Marek Zidlicky and Curtis Murphy to one year contracts. Marek, who led all Swedish Elite League defensemen in scoring, signed a deal for $500,000 whether he plays in the NHL or AHL. Curtis Murphy, the AHL Defenseman of the Year, will get $400,000 if he plays in the NHL. Both are offensive minded, but on the smallish side. If they can last through the grind of the NHL season, they are more than capable of making up for the loss of Andy Delmore's scoring.
Predators Clean House With the free-agent signing period starting July 1st, the Predators have turned the whole organization upside down. Key veterans were let go to make room for up and coming youngsters. Full story
